The Complex Materials group at ETH Zurich translates the science of materials processing into societally impactful technologies through student entrepreneurship and interdisciplinary collaboration.
For this research project in partnership with the Federal University of São Carlos (Brazil), we are looking for a:
PhD candidate (100%) starting in April 2026 or upon agreement.Project background Growing concerns about the environmental impact of human activities have driven a strong demand for replacing synthetic functional materials with sustainable, naturally derived alternatives. Because of their renewable, biodegradable, and biocompatible nature, polysaccharides offer exciting opportunities for the development of next-generation functional materials.
This PhD project combines materials science and microbiology to explore how microorganisms can be used to produce high-performance biopolymers. The scalability and non-seasonality of this process will enable the sustainable manufacturing of biopolymer filaments, films and 3D structures using water-based processing methods.
To accomplish these objectives, we aim to bridge key knowledge gaps, particularly in understanding the processes that stimulate the production of the polymers by microbial cells, as well as the chemical, structural, and mechanical properties of the produced fibers.
Job description - The successful candidate will conduct fundamental research on the production and extraction of microbial polymer fibers following the state-of-the-art parameters and on the preparation of fiber bundles, films and polymer composites for future applications in different materials fields
- In collaboration with an interdisciplinary research team, the candidate will have access to comprehensive scientific expertise for chemical and microbiological analyses, selection of promising microbial strains, biotechnological process parameter control, as well as material preparation and characterization techniques
Profile We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with:
- Master's degree in material science/engineering, polymer chemistry, microbiology or closely related fields
- Proficiency in English is mandatory, both spoken and written
- Good interpersonal skills and the ability to thrive in a diverse, multidisciplinary environment
We offer - Your job with impact: Become part of ETH Zurich, which not only supports your professional development, but also actively contributes to positive change in society
- Fully funded position with competitive salary according to ETH standards
- Interdisciplinary and international research environment
- You can expect numerous benefits, such as public transport season tickets and car sharing, a wide range of sports offered by the ASVZ, childcare and attractive pension benefits
