The newly forming Spin Dynamics and Hyperpolarisation group is looking for two doctoral researchers. Fully funded by a Starting Grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation, the group will explore possibilities to enhance the sensitivity of Magnetic Resonance (ESR and NMR) by harnessing the large spin polarization of photo-excited triplet states in a broadly applicable manner.
Job description - The position involves the use of a state-of-the-art pulse ESR spectrometer with arbitrary phase and amplitude control, and extending it with optical excitation capabilities
- The goal is to polarize nuclear and electron spins and increase sensitivity by orders of magnitude
- The approach will then be applied to challenging problems involving paramagnetic species in chemistry, biology and physics
- The projects will involve both experimental and theoretical work and can be tailored to the interests of the candidates
- The working language of the group is English
Profile - The candidate must hold a Master's degree in (Physical) Chemistry, Physics, Electrical Engineering or a related field at the time of starting the position
- Research experience in any form of magnetic resonance is desired but not necessary, provided there is a strong background in quantum mechanics, practical electronics, and scientific programming
In addition, the candidate should have:
- Strong interest in spin dynamics, magnetic resonance, quantum sensing, and/or RF engineering
- An inner drive to push projects forward
- Openness to collaborating with people from different backgrounds
We offer - Exciting projects at the forefront of magnetic resonance method development
- A position in a newly forming research group with close collaboration and structured mentoring
- A lot of freedom to pursue ideas and to develop both academically and personally
- World-class infrastructure
- A collaborative environment with possibilities to initiate collaborations
- We value diversity and welcome applications from candidates of all backgrounds
