The
Systems Physiology lab, led by Prof. Andreas Moor, at the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering (D-BSSE) of ETH Zurich, located in Basel, is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Postdoctoral Researcher to join a collaborative project focused on uncovering novel prognostic biomarkers for Colorectal Cancer (CRC) using cutting-edge spatial omics technologies and digital pathology approaches. The project is
co-led by Prof. Viktor Koelzer at the University Hospital Basel.Colorectal cancer remains a significant public health challenge, and accurately identifying Stage II CRC patients at high risk of recurrence is crucial for tailored treatment strategies. Current prognostic methods are insufficient, highlighting the need for more reliable biomarkers. This project aims to address this critical need by leveraging the power of
spatial transcriptomics (ST) and
high-plex immunofluorescence (IF) on a large cohort of archival CRC tissues. A key objective is to recapture prognostic markers in histological images through neuronal networks.
Job descriptionThe successful candidate will play a central role in generating and analyzing spatial transcriptomics and image datasets of CRC, identifying novel prognostic biomarkers, and translating these findings into robust, interpretable models for risk stratification of CRC.
Profile - PhD in a relevant field such as Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Cancer Biology, Molecular Biology, Pathology, or a closely related discipline.
- Strong background in spatial omics technologies (e.g., spatial transcriptomics, high-plex imaging), with hands-on experience in data generation and / or analysis.
- Proficiency in bioinformatics and computational data analysis, including experience with large-scale biological datasets.
- Solid understanding and practical experience with machine learning approaches for biomarker discovery and predictive modeling, specifically with hands-on experience in developing and applying neuronal networks (or comparable deep learning models) for image analysis.
- Demonstrated expertise in digital pathology concepts, including image processing, feature extraction from whole slide images, and working with large-scale histological datasets.
- Programming skills in languages such as R and/or Python.
- Experience with colorectal cancer research is an advantage.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary environment.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Proven track record of scientific publications is an advantage.
