Research Analytics Service group, hosted by the section Research Support Services and Acquisitions, is hiring a Senior Data Scientist. The position is to be filled on 1 June 2026.
Job description - As a member of the Research Analytics Service group, you will conduct and provide scientometric analyses and consulting to the researchers, departments, and the executive board of ETH Zurich, and communicate results in a transparent, decision-relevant way
- You proactively clarify requirements, take ownership of projects from joint planning to delivery (including documentation and handover) and collaborate closely with other ETH Zurich units and beyond
- You strengthen the service by designing, improving and maintaining reproducible workflows in close collaboration with other units of the ETH Zurich
- With a service-oriented and improvement-driven mindset, you and the team will contribute to the continuous development of innovative, data-driven approaches and projects in the context of open data and scientometrics
Profile Background
- Master's degree ideally in information science, library science, data science, computer science, or a comparable field; a PhD is an advantage
- Regardless of academic background, the ideal candidate also possesses information science or library science competencies. Research experience or in-depth knowledge of science communication is also an asset
Technical & analytical skills
- Strong programming skills (ideally Python) and commitment to clear, reproducible, well-structured code
- Working knowledge of SQL and/or NoSQL databases (and motivation to deepen your expertise)
- Strong analytical thinking with a structured, quality-focused approach to data and methods.
- Ideally, experience in one or more of the following: data engineering, building data-driven apps, computational linguistics, machine learning/AI, dashboarding, creating/maintaining datasets, contributing to open source software, digital humanities, data management systems
Scientometrics & research evaluation interests
- Experience with scientometric/bibliometric analyses or strong motivation to grow in research assessment methods
- Interest in scholarly communication, open science/open data, and the Swiss research landscape
Project delivery & service mindset
- Proven ability to drive projects proactively: clarifying needs with stakeholders, structuring work, managing priorities, and delivering results
- Strong service orientation: you enjoy enabling others and translating questions into actionable analyses
- Clear communicator who can explain methods, limits, and insights effectively in writing and in discussions with diverse audiences
Languages
- Fluent in English and German (written and spoken)
