The
Laboratory of Energy Science and Engineering (LESE, ETH Zürich) invites applications for a PhD position in the field of CO2 capture, with a focus on structure-performance relationships. At LESE, our research aims to obtain a fundamental understanding of materials that allow for the capture and/or conversion of CO2. This PhD position is funded by the National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) Separations.
Job description - Within a broader research program that integrates process modelling, computational materials screening and discovery, experimental synthesis, and mechanistic and performance assessment under application-relevant conditions for separation technologies, this project aims to accelerate the identification of novel materials for CO2 capture
- Specifically, this PhD project combines the synthesis of model materials as well as their operando characterization and molecular modelling to identify new CO2 sorbent families and to establish structure-performance relationships
- Concerning the experimental techniques employed, this PhD position will focus on (operando) X-ray absorption spectroscopy, X-ray total scattering, and vibrational spectroscopies
Profile - Applicants for this PhD position are expected to have an excellent MSc degree in Chemical Engineering, Material Science, or Chemistry
- Experience and knowledge in material synthesis and/or (structural) material characterization are highly valued
- We are looking for highly motivated, committed, and creative individuals who can work in a team and have outstanding communication skills
- Working in a top-level research environment with advanced laboratory infrastructure, the candidate will have a unique opportunity to develop their research abilities
- The position is available from May 2026 onwards
We offer - An exciting working environment
- Opportunities to learn cutting edge techniques
- Perspectives for career development
- A diverse and interdisciplinary team
