The Environmental Microbiology group led by Prof. Marie Schölmerich at the Department of Environmental Systems Science, ETH Zurich, invites applications for a fully funded
PhD position.
Our group explores the fascinating world of anaerobic microbiology - from the global to the microscopic scale. We focus on microorganisms that use ancient metabolic pathways to convert the greenhouse gases carbon dioxide and methane. Using approaches from metagenomics, classical microbiology, and biochemistry, we study their impact on biogeochemical cycles and identify the molecular mechanisms driving these processes. Our long-term goal is to understand fundamental principles of environmental processes and to inspire sustainable technologies.
This is a full-time position (100%), starting in spring 2026 or upon mutual agreement.
Job descriptionThe PhD candidate will conduct research in re-wetted peatlands to characterize changes in microbial communities and the underlying molecular mechanisms. The project includes fieldwork, metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analyses, microcosm experiments, and isolation experiments.
