At the Energy and Process Systems Engineering (EPSE) group, we develop automated experimental setups for measuring vapor-liquid equilibria (VLE), liquid-liquid equilibria (LLE), and diffusion coefficients-key data for designing and optimizing chemical processes. Because conventional experiments are often time- and resource-intensive, particularly for multicomponent mixtures, our group is creating miniaturized systems that use in-situ Raman spectroscopy to rapidly determine phase compositions in small sample volumes.
Project backgroundThe current project focuses on further developing our automated platforms for measuring thermophysical properties. We integrate sample preparation, sample handling, and fully automated execution of equilibrium and transport-property experiments utilizing milli- and microfluidic setups in combination with Raman spectroscopy. These automatically generated data are crucial for the accelerated design of novel chemical processes such as plastic recycling.
Job descriptionWe are looking for an
ETH student interested in designing and building suitable experimental setups, conducting experiments, and helping with general lab tasks starting around February 2026. Typical tasks include:
- Designing and manufacturing of 3D printed parts
- Supporting hardware modifications of automated experimental setups
- Integrating new sensors
- Running small experimental campaigns
- Extending existing LabVIEW scripts
- General lab tasks
Profile - Initial experience with experimental laboratory work, e.g., from a bachelor's thesis or lab courses
- Strong interest in constructive mechanical engineering (CAD design, component selection, sealing concepts, etc.)
- Good technical understanding and hands-on practical skills
- Ideally, but not required: experience with automation, LabVIEW, and/or (Raman) spectroscopy
- High motivation and an independent, structured, and goal-oriented working style
We offer - The Energy and Process Systems Engineering (EPSE) Group focuses on sustainability in energy and chemical process systems
- We develop methods to advance sustainable energy and chemical process systems from the molecular to the systems scale
- At EPSE, you will be part of a young and motivated research team
