The research group of RNA & Disease at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biophysics (Department of Biology) at ETH Zurich is looking for a staff scientist and lab manager.
Project backgroundThe lab studies mammalian gene regulation and RNA processing pathways. Projects rely on a combination of state-of-the-art structural, biochemical and cellular assays, including cryo-electron and light microscopy, gene editing, next-generation sequencing, proteomics and reconstitution of large protein-RNA complexes from recombinant proteins. Using these tools the research group aims to determine the molecular basis of disease mechanism in order to find novel targets for treatment.
Job description - Management of daily functions, organization and smooth running of the laboratory. Management and updating of existing databases in the laboratory (e.g. plasmids, antibodies, cell lines).
- Design and improve approaches used in the lab such as cloning, gene editing, protein purification, proteomics.
- Design, execute and interpret experiments to take forward research projects and collaborations.
- Organize and participate in teaching/mentoring of practical courses undertaken in the laboratory for Master's and Undergraduate students of ETH.
The position is available from end of 2025.
Profile - The laboratory is looking for an open minded, flexible, individual with an established record of collaborative research to support and complement ongoing projects in the laboratory.
- The PhD scientist must have around 5 years of hands-on experience post-graduation, with a desire to continue wet lab work. To this end, the candidate must have prior experience with cell culture including handling of human cells, engineering cells using CRISPR/Cas9, recombinant protein expression and purification along with routine transient and stable transfections.
- Familiarity with standard cellular and molecular biology techniques with an excellent understanding of fluorescence microscopy and other spectroscopy techniques is required.
- Previous working knowledge with RNA preparation for next generation sequencing is important.
- Prior research experience in the field of RNA processing and post-transcriptional gene regulation will be given weight.
- The individual must have excellent, presentation skills to report research findings at internal meetings and external scientific conferences along with publications in peer reviewed international scientific journals.
